Trump v Anderson:: 601 U.S 2024
Introduction:
The following legal case represents one of the most important in American politics today. As of current President of the United States Donald Trump stands as the only person in this position of power who has been criminally convicted .
Case at Hand:
In this case, US President Donald Trump has been criminally convicted of falsifying his business records. He had done this through hiding hush money payments totalling $130,000 to former mistress Stormy Daniels .
Though making hush money payments is not exactly illegal, he is also being charged with other legal issues within his business empire. The case is more so centred around the fact that Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, had been the one who had paid her off, however, these payments were hidden away in Trump’s account in order to not be seen by the public. Cohen claimed that he knew about the entire scheme, but that he had been told to disguise it. So,he claimed the hush money came from legal fees .
Despite these claims jurors still found Trump to be guilty of all 34 counts of fraud. This is fraudulent given the campaign laws at hand which do not allow for such actions to be hidden away .
Though the results were not in Trump’s favour he claims these were politically motivated and that the case at hand was rigged .
Within the trial Trump’s lawyers tried their best to make Cohen seem unreliable and shady, a strategy that proved to be fruitless in this case as the jury was not convinced .
The question now remains whether or not Trump may end up in prison. Though he could go to jail for upwards of four years for the crimes committed, it is more likely he will end up being forced to pay a fine .
